Deep decay, cracks, trauma or repeated dental work can inflame or infect the pulp inside a tooth. In suitable cases, root canal treatment removes the affected tissue and aims to retain the natural tooth.
Facial swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing or breathing requires urgent assessment. Antibiotics alone do not remove the source of infection inside a tooth.

How is the diagnosis made?
The pain history, cold and percussion tests, gum and bite examination and X-rays are considered together. Not every toothache requires root canal treatment.
What happens during treatment?
After local anaesthesia and isolation, inflamed or infected pulp is removed. The canals are cleaned, shaped, disinfected, filled with a suitable material and sealed.
How many visits are needed?
The number depends on tooth anatomy, infection and response to treatment. Some teeth can be completed in one visit, while others need additional appointments.
Will the tooth need a crown?
The remaining tooth structure and chewing load are assessed. Back teeth in particular may need a crown or another protective restoration in addition to a filling to reduce fracture risk.
