Instructions after implant treatment vary with the procedure, additional surgery and your health. Personal directions from your treating team always take priority over general internet information.

Important information

This content is general information, not a personal diagnosis or treatment recommendation. A dental examination is needed for individual symptoms.

Urgent warning signs

Contact your team or emergency services for bleeding that will not stop, increasing swelling or pain, fever, pus, a bad taste, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

The first 24 to 48 hours

Rest, avoid disturbing the surgical site and follow the recommended diet. Intermittent cold packs may be advised for swelling. Smoking and alcohol can interfere with healing.

Cleaning

Follow your clinician's instructions about when and how to brush the surgical area. Keep other teeth clean. Use a mouthrinse only if recommended and for the stated duration; do not add unprescribed products.

Long-term care

An implant crown needs plaque control just like natural teeth. Daily brushing, suitable interdental cleaning and regular clinical checks support the health of tissues around the implant.
